What is Evil?

Postby T on Thu Feb 07, 2008 7:11 pm

Children in extremist Islamic-run countries are being raised to hate anything American and to kill all Americans.

The guards at Tuol Sleng felt they have done nothing wrong even though they tortured and killed men, women, and children.

Police in all kinds of countries arrest people who commit crimes.

In these examples, all of these people do not see themselves as evil. They see themselves as justice.

So what is evil? Is there such a thing as good and evil? Or is evil something subjective and not universal?

I'll wait for others to answer before I give my own.

I think that good and evil are man-made since there is no such thing as evil animals.

Evil what we classify things that is unknown, and what is not known or ignorant about, we are frightened about it. What I'm saying basically, is that evil is ignorance, and good is knowledge. LOL I seem to agree with Plato a lot.

Plato argued that that which we call evil is merely ignorance and that good is that which everyone desires.

I also think religion plays a huge role in what is good and evil. Good, is whatever that religion tells us to do, and evil is what that religion tells us what not to do.

Good/evil is what we make it to be. There are those who are raised to think that torture and violence is evil, and there are those who think that hippies and communists are evil. Good/evil is relative to the individual, but often influenced by others. What is "evil" to one person may not be "evil" to another. Same goes for "good."

Also, just to say, though I speak of evil as being relative to the individuals, I am an absolutist and what I find to be evil I will apply to others, places, and times. This is going into relativism vs. absolutism, which we are not specifically talking about, but I image it could be applied here.
